Powergen energy record price increase

February 28th, 2006

PRICE RISE MISERY AS POWERGEN HITS CUSTOMERS WITH RECORD INCREASES

· 24.4% increase in gas prices and 18.4% increase for electricity

· Big price rises result in 1 person every 48 seconds being plunged into fuel poverty

· Latest announcement comes as UK braces itself for arctic weather

Powergen, the UK’s second largest energy supplier, today became the last of the ‘Big 6’ power companies to increase its prices this year according to independent switching and comparison site uSwitch.com. It’s 5.5 million customers will see gas bills increase by £106.69 whilst electricity bills will rise by £55.60.

Powergen’s announcement couldn’t come at a worse time for its customers, as the UK braces itself for Arctic temperatures of -15ºC. The latest round of price rises by the ‘Big 6’ energy suppliers is set to cause misery for over 660,000 UK households by plunging them into fuel poverty – a shocking 1 household every 48 seconds.7 This would take the number of households in fuel poverty in the UK well over the 3 million mark.
